New Students

June 28th, 2010

The Kaikan welcomes visitors and prospective members regardless of previous experience – from beginner to experienced.  The only way to decide is to try it!

Prospective members are encouraged to come by to observe a class.  Please contact the Sensei in advance and arrive before the scheduled start time for class.  After you have had a opportunity to watch a class, the Sensei will sit down with you to evaluate your personal goals and objectives with respect to karate.

Classes follow traditional dojo etiquette (taitaikiyo) with a philosophy of perservance, mutual respect and trust, and nonaggression.  In order to create an atmosphere that is conducive to learning and progressive training, members are expected to work hard and to observe correct etiquette and protocol.  It is the prerogative of the instructor to limit membership to ensure the quality of training for all participants.

What to Wear

T-shirts, sweats, and other ordinary workout clothes are fine for beginning students.  Everyone begins his or her training without rank as a white belt, regardless of prior training.  Members who continue to practice for more than a month should wear a clean, white gi without insignia or other ornamentation.  The plain white gi symbolizes the equal status of all practitioners.

For the safety of yourself and others, watches and jewelry must be removed during practice.  As well, shoes and socks are removed as practice is done barefoot within the dojo.  Cellphones must be turned off if brought into the dojo.

Class Rates

Our mission is to provide the highest quality training in traditional karate and kobudo, while keeping classes affordable. As a not-for-profit group, our rates are fair and straightforward without set-up fees or long-term contracts. As well, we encourage members to participate as much as possible and bring their enthusiasm to each class!

Tuition is charged on a monthly basis, with a minimal annual registration fee. Fees are due on the 1st of each month and pay for training for the month that follows. Students are encouraged to train as often as possible, but no refund is available for missed trainings.
