Ogasawara-Ha Shorinji-Ryu Karatedo is a classical Japanese martial art that teaches unarmed techniques, weapons, and meditation.
Through rigorous practice, the goal is to develop the body, mind, and character of the practitioner - to foster personal growth, forge one's spirit, and lead to harmony and insight.
The Kaikan Dojo is located in San Francisco in the Richmond/Geary area.
The Kaikan is a school providing classes in traditional Japanese karatedo with an emphasis on mutual respect, self-discipline, and physical conditioning.
Training includes kihon waza (fundamental techniques), kata (formal exercises), kumite (two-person exercises), and kobudo (weapons training).
Originally practiced in Okinawa, karatedo was introduced to Japan in the early 20th century and has since spread across the world.
Shorinji-Ryu is one of many schools or 'ryu' of karatedo.
'Ogasawara-Ha' identifies our school's lineage specifically through the Ogasawara family.
The formal name, 'Sakugawa Koshiki' (Sakugawa orthodox), indicates that our school preserves the concepts and techniques taught by the Okinawan master Sakugawa about 150 years ago.
'Shorinji' pays homage to the Shaolin temple, from which all forms of karatedo claim descent.
